IUPUI is pleased to announce it is collaborating as an anchor institution partner with the Near-Westside Community Schools project of the Mary Rigg Neighborhood Center. The project has been selected to participate in a school health initiative with the national Coalition for Community Schools.
The Coalition for Community Schools selected the Indianapolis Near-Westside Community Schools Project as one of five sites nationwide to participate in a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Healthier School Communities initiative.
The Washington, D.C.-based Coalition plans to work over the next year with the Mary Rigg project partners focused on the five Near-Westside Indianapolis Public Schools—Stephen Foster Elementary #67, William Penn #49, Wendell Phillips #63, George Washington and Daniel Webster #46—to strengthen healthcare access to develop healthier youth and families.
Drawing on the health strengths of the campus, IUPUI has committed to a leadership role in the initiative. Facilitated by Elizabeth Odle of the Mary Rigg Center and Jim Grim of the IUPUI Office of Community Engagement, they are forming a Culture of Health Leadership Committee to identify healthcare gaps for families of the school communities, then to address solutions. The team also will participate in cross-site networking with the four other school communities of the national initiative.
